Most Denverites remember KBPI as the popular FM Rock station of the 1980s. During its humble beginnings in the 1960s however, KBPI saved a Denver landmark, the D&F tower.
KBPI’s founder Bill Pierson initially housed his station in the nearly abandoned tower and its transmitter was on the upper floors. In the mid 1960s, when historic preservation was not revered as it is today, the old tower was slated for demolition, to be replaced by a modern structure.
Pierson kept his station in the tower and literally kept the lights on while leading a fight to save it from the wrecking ball, a fight that would be successful, and earn him national recognition.
For his contributions to Denver broadcasting and historic preservation, Pierson was inducted into the BPC Hall of Fame in 2013.
