January 4, 1923… Capt. W.L. Winner Jr. and the Winner Radio Company licensed KFEL Denver. The station had already been on the air, but 100 years ago KFEL made it official. KFEL radio would lead to Denver’s first TV station three decades later (KFEL TV Channel 2, now KWGN).

KFEL was at a number of frequencies before settling in at 950 AM in the early 40s. KFEL AM radio would later become 95 KIMN, KYGO AM, 950 the FAN ( KKFN) and is now Altitude AM 950 (KKSE AM). The KFEL call letters are now used by a Pueblo station.

National Guard Capt. W.L. Winner Jr. was a true broadcast pioneer. He sold KFEL in 1927 to Eugene O’Fallon.
