New Years Day, 1938 KLZ broadcasts the 2nd Annual Cotton Bowl Classic football game from Dallas Texas. Playing in the game, the University of Colorado and Rice Institute (later Rice University). Warren Williams did play by play and Jack Fitzpatrick was the commercial voice for the KLZ broadcast. 

The CU quarterback was future Supreme Court Justice Byron “Whizzer” White. Rice won 28-14. 

The University of Colorado wouldn’t play in the Cotton Bowl again until 1996, when they would defeat Oregon 38-6.
