In the summer of 1947, KLZ FM signs on at 94.1 FM. It’s one of the first (if not the first) FM west of St. Louis. It was the only FM station on the air in Colorado until KOA-FM signed on at 95.7 FM late the next year and KFEL-FM at 97.3 soon after. KLZ had actually been authorized to broadcast in FM prior to January 1,1939.
The September 1947 issue of “Sponsor Magazine”” reported:
“Hugh Terry, manager of KLZ-FM as well as KLZ, is putting his promotional ability to work on FM. As soon as he placed the station on the air, one sheet silk screened posters were sent to all radio dealers which emphasized the new FM station’s six hour schedule and its regular broadcasts of the
Denver Bears home games, day and night. Terry has plenty of plans that should make Denver FM-conscious.”
By 1954, mentions of the FM station disappeared from trade publications.
KLZ FM returned to the air in 1962 at 106.7, later becoming legendary album rock station KAZY. Corporate mergers resulted in KBPI moving to 106.7 in 1994 after over 30 years at 105.9 ending the run of KAZY.
94.1 FM is now a translator for 850 KOA.
