December 15, 1924, KOA radio signs on. It’s the second station named KOA… the first was licensed in March 1922 to the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) in Denver. That station was “deleted” June 23, 1923 after they had left the air. A number of stations of the era also cane and went.
In 1924, General Electric licensed a new station, adopting the out-of-use KOA call letters. KOA was part of a three station network of GE stations (WGY, KGO and KOA). The station broadcast in the beginning at 930 AM at 2,000 watts. Through 1934 the station increased power and moved to 830 AM. In the early 1940s, KOA moved to 850 AM. The 50,000 watt station can be heard in many states.
Congratulations to KOA on 95 years on the air!
