On December 6,1950, NBC Radio’s “Big Story,” heard on KOA and nationwide dramatizes a story by Denver Post Reporter Bernard Beckwith. 

The names of everyone but the reporter were changed for the story. The story centers on the disappearance of the Betty Gray, wife of Paul Gray (in reality, John Rice), in Rollinsville Colorado. Paul Gray reported her disappearance, saying he had seen her leave for Chicago on the California Zephyr from Denver’s Union Station.

On “The Big Story” newspaper reports from around the country entered their true, heroic stories of reporting the news to win $500 from the sponsor of the show, The American Cigarette Company, along with a dramatization of their story. “The Big Story” ran on both NBC and AFRS with 381 half hour shows over eight years.
